On Monday evening, I traveled from the Gustavus campus with several other Gusties to a Girl Talk concert at First Avenue in Minneapolis. Girl Talk is the stage name for the musician Gregg Gillis. Gregg is a mashup artist, meaning he uses dozens of samples of other songs to create a new song. His only instrument is his laptop.
We left Gustavus at about 7:30 P.M. and made it to Minneapolis in an hour. First Avenue was packed. Girl Talk invited nearly 55 people on stage with him in order to dance. During the 2 hour show, Girl Talk danced and sampled songs like a maniac. It was absolutely crazy, and the whole crowd loved it.
After the show was over, all 15 of us Gusties that went to the concert piled back in a van and made it back to GAC by 2 in the morning. It was a late night, but definitely worth it. We all agreed that First Avenue is a great venue, and we will have to return for another show.
St. Peter’s proximity to the Twin Cities has been especially appreciated by me of late. I have learned to love the fact that Gustavus is a college in a small town, but students can easily venture to a big city for an evening if they so choose.
