Biking Posted on February 15th, 2008 by

Since I would be living farther away from the academic buildings of the Gustavus campus this year, I decided that I wanted to bring a bike to college. That left me with the problem of trying to procure a cheap and effective bicycle.

I first turned to my Grandpa, who had a very old bike laying around at his house. Let me describe it to you. The bike was a one speed with a white frame and tacky purple tire guards. While there was no question about the bikes odd appearance, I felt as though using such an old piece of equipment would be like wearing a badge of honor around campus. Besides, I planned to leave the bike outside, so that if it got scraped up because of weather I wouldn’t upset. Sadly, after giving the bike a brief test run, it was clear that it was not in working condition.

So, I turned to buying a new, inexpensive bike. I ended up buying a red, one speed cruiser bike. I am 6′ 2″, so the bike is a tad small for me, but I have really enjoyed cycling around campus thus far. Having a bike allows me to sleep for an extra 5 minutes in the morning, and that makes all the difference.
